| --- What will the pickers, all lean and lanky, gather for their guests today? Will there be nuts; shiny, brown reddish? Will there be fruit; juicy, spring luscious? No nuts, no fruit; how curious? No sustenance to lift the weary traveller? No scrap of flesh or squeeze of juice to tame our growls of hunger? What form of grove is this so miserly in its gifts? Not a grove the like of which this journeyman has seen before. What purpose then doth man stand yonder so rigidly in formation. If not for picking, what ushers him to this time bend and that time reach? What charges him to move, back and forth, this way that way, if not to keep his harvest safe from finch's beak or robin's claw. Pray tell, what duty, toil or obligation so occupies these burly men? Verily, it is volleyball. |
