Echoing the words of Bachman Turner Overdrive, “You ain’t seen nothing yet” proclaimed Malory Eagles chairman David Jenkinson as he celebrated the team’s fantastic double. Malory’s men have notched up 35 national division one and cup titles in just 24 years, a record unrivalled in UK volleyball.

The excited Crystal Palace crowd were treated to a display of pure confidence as Malory held, subdued and then deflated the hopeful Polonia squad. “We just didn’t turn up today”, lamented Polonia coach Krzys Hykiel, disappointed at his

The final matches of volleyball’s 2009/10 season take place this weekend at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. With the event returning to London, it’s fitting that the Men’s Cup Final will take place between league champions Malory Eagles and fellow Londoners Polonia. This will be Malory’s 19th Cup Final appearance and their 15th Cup title if they win. In contrast, Polonia (who finished fourth in the league this year) have won once, back in 1991.

The trophy mismatch means nothing as Polonia have been improving steadily

The importance of this match to their title pursuit inevitably played a part in Malory’s faltering 3-0 win over Middlesbrough. The Eagles have achieved the last needed win for this year’s title.

An early start followed by the long journey up to North Yorkshire looked to have sapped the Eagles’ energy as they warmed up for their last away match of the 2009/10 season. All pressure was on the young shoulders of Ashley Trodden as the Eagles travelled with just a single setter but

Malory made hard work of their match against league strugglers, Cambridge, but the 3-0 victory leaves them in line for a 20th Division One title.

Cambridge didn’t allow late arrival to affect their game, staying level with the league leaders for most of set one. Apprentice Malory setter Ashley Trodden found attackers Luciano Pinter and Darius Setsoafia with regularity but the team generally lacked the smoothness and flow that had given them victory over Sheffield. Although Malory fell behind at 19-18, a fine serving run from Alex Bialokoz
